In his attempt to do both he travels with his brother, sister, manservant, groom, a runaway slave, and the family ghost to Oranstone to help the people there defend themselves against the Vorsag. He is also trying to prove that he is worthy of Hurog. Throughout the book Ward is continually trying to figure out who he is now that he doesn't have to hide his intelligence. He had spent years pretending to be stupid in an attempt to keep his father from seeing him as a rival for Hurog and now he needs to prove that he isn't stupid or he will be sent to an insane asylum. In Dragon Bones, Ward inherits Hurog from his tyrannical father. Both have tight plots and most of the story is told in the first person by the main character, Ward of Hurog.
